He learns to take care of himself which is most likely why he does not value other people’s lives. He lives to protect himself and only care about himself. Once he gets the baby his means of survival change. He has to care for someone other than himself for the first time in the novel. He learns what he has to do by trusting others and letting people into his live which is something he is not accustomed too. Then at the end of the story his beliefs for survival change again by risking his own life to save the baby’s.
